about

An extended suite of music that seeks to recreate the full energy, excitement and intensity of the live performance of Culebra in the 1981 San Francisco Carnaval parade from 25th and Capp Street in the Mission all the way to San Francisco Civic Center, a cyclic series of movements that was played continuously on the award winning Tropical Outerspace float and dance troupe led by Carnaval Grand Marshall Sir Lawrenece Washington and American Revolving Theatre (A.R.T.).

This was one of seminal magic days in the history of both the San Francisco Carnaval as well as the band Culebra, which consisted of the power trio of Jefferson Braswell (guitar and keyboards), Carl Herder (bass) and D.C. Carter (drums), along with a percussion battery of 8 percussionists led by Gary Moniitto.

The recording incorporates some of the melody lines and arrangements that evolved from 8 hours of live, nonstop performance of the music in the course of the day-long 1981 Carnaval that cooked, stirred and gelled the band into a marvelously magic and trance-inducing musical experience. Fortunately, the extended track manages to capture and evoke the amazing energy and carnaval vibe of the live event.

lyrics

Dancing, in Carnaval
Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall
Romancing, for one and all
Anyway you want to ...
You can dig it -- really dig it !
Jump up and feel like flying
Without even trying ...

So come on down to Carnaval now
Jump in the streets
So come on down to Carnaval now
It just can't be beat !
